University Site License
The University Library provides the RWTH Aachen University community (students and staff) with free access to Citavi for Windows, Citavi Web and Citavi for DBServer through a university site license. When you register for Citavi, you are assigned licenses for Citavi for Windows and Citavi Web by default.
The license for Citavi for DBServer is available free of charge in the RWTH software center for employees and students. After the free purchase, the download link of the license file will be sent to you by e-mail. Information on how to install the license and how to set up a SQL Server can be found in the readme file "ITC_README_Lizenzinformationen.txt". Citavi for DBServer is a variant of Citavi specially tailored to the requirements of larger organizations. This variant is especially suitable for collaborative work within large teams, e.g. at institutes. A special feature is the ability to store Citavi projects centrally on a Microsoft SQL server. Please note: Only database owners and system administrators can install licenses for Citavi for DBServer.
Citavi licenses are specific to a person, not a computer. You may use your licenses on any number of computers, but you may not give your license to other people. However, a university site license may be used on a computer in a business or non-profit organization to complete an academic project.
The campus license for Citavi may only be used for the duration of your studies or your employment contract at RWTH Aachen University. After the license expires, existing projects can no longer be opened and edited, and new projects can't be created.
Citavi 6 the new version of the reference management program Citavi has been available to download since the beginning 2018. Citavi 6 runs on Windows 11, 10 and 8.1. Windows XP is no longer supported.
Projects begun with Citavi 5 can be opened with Citavi 6 without any problems. However, it is not possible to use a Citavi 6 project with Citavi 5.
Mac and Linux
Citavi is solely a Windows program. Mac users are recommended to use the campus licensed reference management program EndNote or the free software Zotero. Zotero also runs on the Linux operating system.
Word Processing Programs
Citavi works with all word processing programs that know RTF format. LaTex users can use cross-sections for TeX editors. A step-by-step instruction is provided and available for download at the bottom of this page.
