Citations

Advantages

  • Can be used in a variety of ways (e.g. for author networks)
  • Outstanding publications can be determined

Disadvantages

  • Not a measurement of importance, quality, or elegance of the work
  • Negative citations are not recognizable
  • Liable to manipulation

Citations are the nodes in the academia and science network. In bibliometrics the number of citations is regarded as a measurement for a work's resonance.

Principally, many citations would allude to important insights. However there's no rule without an exception: self- and negative citations as well as similar biases can lead to false interpretations. Additionally, innovative work may be negatively affected if focus is only on the number of citations.
